Geocache Description:

As a cache hider, I'd like to hide at least one of each type of hide available. This is our version of a WSQ hide. The cache is in a cemetery of historical significance to the Big Bend/Vernon area; the most recent grave marker is about 150 years old.

The first Caucasian settlers arrived in what is now Vernon, Wisconsin in 1836.
John Dodge, Prucius Putman, Curtis B. and Orien Haseltine came from Andover, Vermont in November of that year. When they made their claims, they built a cabin measuring 15’ by 16’ in an area later know as Dodges Corners. It is believed that Orien Haseltine is responsible for giving Vernon its name.

John Dodge, who passed away on August 29, 1858, and some of his family and friends are buried in Vernon’s first cemetery. Dodges Corners Cemetery, which contains only about 2 dozen graves, is now maintained by the Big Bend/Vernon Historical Society.

This historical cemetery is on public land but is very close to two private residences. The only parking available is on the roadside. Entrance to the cache site is via a well maintained path that ascends the hill between the two private homes. Please be cautious and courteous when parking and visiting.

Permission for placement of this cache was obtained from Wanda Olsen of the Big Bend/Vernon Historical Society.
