A beautiful little lake high in the Kootenays.
Leadville Lake is one of a few small lakes in this region of the Kootenays. The valleys around here are so well drained that lakes are surprisingly few. I was blown away a few winters ago on a flight over this area. Snowmobilers had worked their way up the Leadville Creek valley and actually made it right up to the lake and had carved paths around the bowl and straight up to the ridge-line... Amazing. Exploring this area and finding this cache should prove to be a rewarding and enjoyable endeavour.
Access Leadville Lake by turning off of Highway 3 at the Goat River Forestry Road then turning right at the Leadville turn off and another right onto O'Brien Road just after crossing the bridge. From here you have to thank the outdoor enthusiasts living in and around Creston for keeping the old trail open. The last 8 km must be done on foot or by quad. I do the ride on a motorcycle but you had better be comfortable driving on rubble! Check GoogleEarth for an idea about the final 8 kms. It is rugged!
The cache is located by following the foot path to the east side (left) of the lake. My GPS had troubles getting a signal due to the high ridge lines and trees. I'm including a photo in the Gallery to help you find it. The cache is a small lock&lock containing a USB stick and a deck of kids' playing cards.
