Geocache Description:

This cache will bring you to the Little Pigeon Church and Cemetery within Lincoln State Park. The Little Pigeon Creek Settlement was one of the first settlements in the area. The trail that runs through the area is a remnant of the old road that used to exist between the Gentry store and Troy, Indiana. Back in the day, Troy was the center of trade on the Ohio River and the location of a ferry crossing into Kentucky.

Construction of a church was one of the top priorities for the new settlement. The first church was built in 1816. A second church was constructed in 1875. The third—and current—church was built in 1948. The church is still used for services today, so please be respectful of the area.

The Little Pigeon Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the initial settlers, including Abraham Lincoln’s sister: Sarah Lincoln Grigsby. You can feel the history in this place as you walk amongst the gravesites, many of which are marked by stones made illegible by the passage of time.

The cache is a camo'd specimen bottle located near the parking area, away from the gravesites. Please be respectful of the area. No night caching on this one! Bring your own writing instrument.
