Geocache Description:

Instantly recognized from its unique opening guitar riff, Norman Greenbaum's 'Spirit in the Sky', which was published in 1969, has aged well and still sounds great today. It's still being used in sound tracks and commercials with some frequency.

Norman Greenbaum had played in a psychedelic jug band titled, Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band. They had a minor hit titled, "The Eggplant that Ate Chicago". However, they split up and Greenbaum was able to land a solo contract. His one big success was "Spirit in the Sky", from the album of the same name.

Greenbaum said he was inspired after seeing Porter Wagoner sing a gospel song, and decided he should do one too. He has been quoted as saying it was easy and only took him 15 minutes to write the lyrics. It's interesting that despite lyrics like, "Have to find a friend in Jesus", that Greenbaum is and was a practicing Jew.

If you are interested in how Russell DaShiell got those interesting sounds from his guitar, check out the Wiki listing for "Spirit in the Sky". He gives credit to Jimi Hendrix for inspiring his technique. It's not often you find a song for which the band notes inspiration from Porter Wagoner and Jimi Hendrix.

Norman Greenbaum no longer performs, but he still is a music promoter in California. He's still collecting royalties from his one hit wonder. "Spirit in the Sky" was voted the 85th best One Hit Wonder by VH1, and was ranked 333rd by Rolling Stone on the list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

The cache is a peanut butter jar located near a church in Bridgeport. It should not be too tough a find. However, do not try this cache on Sunday morning or other times when the church is in session.
