This cache is NOT in 87 Acre Park
A simple two stage multi designed to take you for a walk. We planned this cache out nearly 18 months ago. The final was supposed to be in 87 Acre Park--which contains an abandoned quarry and is supposed to be a great place to bird watch.
When we went to the park to scope out locations for the final we found it totally fenced and signed as No Trespassing. I then set out on a curious journey to find out why a "Park" was not accessible to the public. The page I linked to above was the only reference to this park on the web at the time.
I emailed my city councilor who forwarded my email to various departments at the City of Hamilton who should have known about this park. They all replied over a period of two to three weeks that they had never heard of such a place and could not comment on my request for information. Then life got in the way and I didn’t think about it again.
Nearly six months later I received an email from a senior employee at the City of Hamilton. He explained that this property was transferred to the City after amalgamation from the old City of Stoney Creek. That is why no one seemed to know anything about it. My email had sparked interest in this park and he had investigated its history for me.
The park was originally a Vinemount Quarries property. Subsequent to the quarry’s closure it was transferred to the City of Stoney Creek for use as a non-hazardous landfill site. The landfill was officially closed in 2005. The property is currently being monitored and will most likely be turned into recreational land when it is determined that it is suitable for human use.
Since it may be many years before I can place a cache in this park I decided to place one nearby. This cache truly turned out to be an elusive quarry for me.
Side note: When we went out today to make the placement the oldest two squirrels elected to stay in the car and listen to Rex Murphy interview Stephane Dion on CBC Radio. What they won't do to avoid geocaching!
