Geocache Description:

Magnetic Key Holder hidden in semi-typical urban fashion. Contains Cache note, log and small item for FTF. BYO Pen.

On July 3, 1863, when Lee retreated from Gettysburg, the small town with a population of under 2,400 was left with over 21,000 wounded soldiers. Surgeon Jonathan Letterman, who was the Surgeon for the Army of the Potomic, was set with the task of caring for them, and establishing a Field Hospital. This cache rests on the spot where what would come to be known as CAMP LETTERMAN would be.

Camp Letterman was the Field Hospital established on the Wolf Farm in July of 1863. It would remain in operation only until November 20, 1863, the day after President Lincoln gave the now famous Gettysburg Address.

The men who were treated there would be treated by a handful of surgeons and medics, and women who came from near and far in search of their loved ones. Sanitary conditions aside, the food would prove to be the number one killer at Camp Letterman. Two thirds of the people who died there would die of bad food and malnutrition, including the women treating the men.

Today, this shopping center stands on that once hallowed ground. We placed this cache outside an establishment Surgeon Letterman may have visited for his supplies.
