Did you want to learn about the Walking Through
Time tour?
The story of Arizona's first university actually begins
on March 12, 1885 when the legislature passed an act to "Organize
the Universoty of the Territory of Arizona." Tucson merchant Jacob
S. Mansfeld selected a "suitable" site and convinced two gamblers
and a saloon keeper to donate 40 acres of land. The deed was
recorded Nov. 27, 1886. The fledgling campus was enclosed with
barbed wire to keep the catle out. By the time Arizona became a
state in 1912, the cmpus had expanded to include a president's
home, gymnasium, library/museum and science hall (complete with a
telescope borrowed from Harvard), plus two dormitories.
... Follow the sidewalk east and take the crosswalk to the the
octagonal Memorial Fountain in front of Old Main. This commemorates
University students who died in World War I. At the dedication on
Jan. 31, 1920, the principle speaker was General of the Armies John
J. Pershing who commanded the American forces in France. The
fountain is a gift from Alexander Berger, whose nephew was among
those who died...
... The low black lava rock wall that curves up and peaks
gracefully to form today's Main Gate entrance to the University
dates from 1916. The pillars rise to more than six feet in height
with passageways for pedestrians on either side of University
Boulevard. This wall of rough volcanic stones from the Tucson
Mountains defines much of the original 40-acre campus. It measures
approximately 4700 feet in length, averages four feet in height and
is two feet thick...
