Geocache Description:

Lovely vistas and easy access, but avoid the trees as some are nasty.

"Charlestown, Nevis has long been the commercial center of the island as well as its capital and is located on the island's west coast. Protection of the town was of paramount importance, so in 1628 the British began construction of Fort Charles. The Dutch, Spanish and French proved to be a continued threat as well as pirates who had their eye on the island's ever growing wealth from sugar cane production. The French were able to get a foothold on the island in 1706 but Nevis was to become under British rule once again.

At one time the fort had no less than 25 canons on site, a few still remain at the site today. Visitors can walk the grounds and see the ruins of the stone structures, the old well and enjoy the view from the rocky cliffs above the ocean.

Much of the area is overgrown so it would be wise to wear proper footwear. Fort Charles was abandoned in 1894, but proved to be an important landmark in keeping the island safe from invasion.

Fort Charles is one of the historic sites on the Nevis Heritage Trail which directs you to 25 of the islands historic sites beginning in historic Charlestown. There is a map located by the ticket booths for the ferry. You'll follow the trail by driving to the various points to visit historic churches, plantations, forts and more.

There is also a historic Fort Charles on the island of St. Kitts." (justasklocals.com)

You will pass through the remains of a condo development that was severely damaged by a hurricane on your way into the cache.

Cache container is now a Coke bottle

This cache was originally placed by Jim Johnson/WalkNevis, but the account has been transferred to the Nevis Ministry of Tourism to help preserve his original collection of caches placed on Nevis. Jim was a naturalist and guide who hid these well thought-out caches highlighting many unique natural and historical features on the Island. Cachers have told us that Jim’s caches are one of the best collections of caches by a single CO that they have encountered. Jim passed away in a house fire in 2010.

Due to the Ministry’s limited staff and the remoteness of some of these caches, we would encourage seekers to help with this preservation by bringing along small cache containers and log sheets to replace any missing caches. Spoiler site sketches have been added to help in case it is missing. If you see other maintenance needs, please email the account rather than posting a “needs maintenance” log, and we will take care of it as soon as we can.
