Geocache Description:

This is one of two tribute caches to Ginger Houser, a pioneer geocacher in British Columbia and one of the famous "WILD THINGIES."

This is also one of two caches I have hidden in the Rideau Canal System.

This is a single lock system, built in 1927, in the river bed of the Rideau where rapids dropped 4 1/2 feet over a 1/2 mile stretch. The house was completed in 1929 and the dam and artificial channel in 1930. The lock underwent a major change in 1969, when the gate operations were converted from a manual to a hydraulic system.

The engineer in charge of the construction was Lieutenant-Colonel John By. A member of the Royal Engineers, he was sent by England in 1826, to supervise canal construction.

The cache is not at the posted co-ordinates. To find this cache, you must search out some specific information you will find on the site. All answers can be found at the posted co-ordinates.

Once you have found the cache, make sure you cross over the locks to the island where you can truly experience nature in a most spectacular setting. There are picnic tables here for your enjoyment. This is not a large symphony, but is well worth the visit

There is lots of parking here. There may be a small parking fee depending on the time of year.

1. What is the length of the canal system (in miles)?

2. How many locks are grouped in the 24 stations?

3. What year was the system signed over to Canada?

4. Do not swim within how many metres of a lock gate?

Add your answers for 1 and 2. Add 50 to the number. Then subtract 7. This number is ABC.

Add your answers 3 and 4. Divide by 2. Subtract 2. This number is DEF.

Your new co-ordinates are:

N 45 19.ABC
W 075 41.DEF

The cache is a camouflaged plastic container, with a logbook and a pencil and a couple of small items. Please practice stealth here as it can be very busy on certain days, mainly weekends or holidays. Also, please ensure that you take care to return the cache to its proper hiding spot.

This Cache is on Parks Canada and PERMISSION GRANTED BY Don MacKay
