Geocache Description:

Hindon is a favorite spot of mine. Just 30 minutes from Outram yet it has a distinct Central Otago feel about it.

I originally placed "His Master's Voice" cache (GCN8GT) at Hindon in March 2005. It was on the opposite side of the river from this cache however. Several people noted that they had got off the Taieri Gorge train at Hindon and been excited to note that there was a cache just 120 metres away. That excitement soon faded apparently when they realised that there was a river in the way and no time to head down to the bridge before the train departed.

So I've moved the cache to this new spot which will be a breeze for train travellers to access. It can also be accessed over well maintained gravel roads. The cache is the same container and contents as the now-archived GCN8GT cache (black 1.2 litre snaplock).

Be aware that in winter this area can be badly affected by snow so check the forecast if heading to the cache during this time.

Once you've found the cache do take time to check the info boards at the station and if you have the chance check out the road-rail bridge (if you arrived at the station by train from Dunedin you crossed it just a couple of hundred metres before the station. If you travelled in by road, the bridge is on Hindon Road about 200 metres past the turn-off to the station.) It is one of just five remaining in New Zealand (at time of writing). Another is further up the Taieri Gorge line at Matarae. Unfortunately, you won't cross this one if the train is terminating at Pukerangi but on those trips where the train is continuing to Middlemarch you will cross it. Incidentally, the other road-rail bridges are on the line between Greymouth and Hokitika (two) and in the Bay of Plenty.

Be sure to check "Pukerangi" cache (GCMDM3) further up the Taieri Gorge line.
