The first of a series of caches starting and finishing in the picturesque village of Barnburgh. The route to this cache is along quiet village roads and then a good track. The posted coordinates are not the true cache location.
**NOTE THAT THE ROAD BETWEEN ADWICK ON DEARNE & BARNBURGH IS CLOSED FROM 13.10 FOR 4 WEEKS.
I always enjoy walking around this area and set a previous cache series here 2 years ago but it had to be archived as 2 caches ‘went missing’. There is plenty to see and/or read about Barnburgh so I thought it appropriate for the first cache to be based on a little fact finding around the village before heading out on a good track to the first cache.
For those who may be interested there is an information board in front of St Peter’s Church giving some information about the village but the board has become a little faded so anyone wishing to learn more about Barnburgh and some of the features I mention in the next paragraph can do so by visiting www.barnburghandharlington.co.uk
If you visit the site you will learn more about St Peters Church, famously known as the 'Cat and Man Church'. Sir Percival Cresacre was reputedly involved in a bizarre incident where ‘The Cat killed the Man’ and 'The Man killed the Cat’. You must be intrigued so read about it on the village website and/or go inside the church and have a look at the 'Cat and Man effigy'.
Then there is the famous and spectacular Dovecote which is now on private land but as part of an historical agreement it must open to the public one day per year. The date is widely circulated via the village website.
Have a look at the old water pump near the parking cords (keep off the grass!), find out what year the Jubilee Tree was planted and then visit the pinfold on your way to the cache. You could also call in at the pub!
Anyway I’ll leave it to the individual to learn more about the village – let’s get to down a cracking 4-5 mile walk principally along the tracks and paths to the North East of Barnburgh.
Parking is available outside St Peter’s Church at or around N53 31.390 W001 16.238 but please bear in mind at times of church worship you may have look a little further away but don't worry as there are plenty of safe roadside parking spots.
The first cache is on a track leading away from the village at N53 31.ABC W001 15.DEF. In order to find the coordinates you should first go to the Jubilee Tree which sits opposite the parking area in middle of a road island opposite the village pub. Make a note of the date that the tree was planted in the format DD/MM/YYYY?
A=Second digit of the year.
C=First digit of the month.
D=Third digit of the year.
F=First digit of the day.
Now have a walk to N53 31.477 W001 16.097 at the end of Hall Street. From here you can see into the private grounds housing the Dovecote. Look around you and count the black bollards and benches.
E=Number of black bollards minus number of benches.
Now walk out of the village to the Pinfold at N53 31.583 W001 16.250.
B=How many trees are inside the Pinfold?
Now off you go to find the cache. DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE ALONG TRACKS TO ANY OF THE CACHES IN THIS SERIES.
Don’t forget to check the rear of the log book as the coordinates for ‘Barnburgh 5 – Return to the Cliffe’ are contained within one of the logbooks of caches 1-4 in the series.
The cache is a small tupperware style container covered in a bit of cammo tape and it contains a few trade items, log book, pen, pencil, sharpener, cache box card and FTF card.
PLEASE TAKE TIME TO REHIDE THE CACHE PROPERLY AS IT WOULD BE A SHAME FOR ME TO HAVE TO ARCHIVE THIS SERIES DUE TO MISSING CACHES.
