Geocache Description:

The life and times of :
CARLO GIORGIO DOMENICO ENRICO CATANI (1852-1918)
Apart from having a very long name he achieved a few things in his relatively short lifetime.

As Follows:
• Born 22 April 1852 at Florence, Italy where he was also educated and became a civil engineer.
• Was involved in railway construction in Italy
• Came to Australia in 1876 and within weeks joined the Department of Crown Lands & Survey as a drasftman. Later transferred to the public Works as a draftsman, then an assistant engineer and later became head of his Department.
• 1892 Drained the Koo-Wee-Rup Swamp.
• 1896 Widened and improved the Yarra River upstream from Princess Bridge and planted the Elms and Oaks along Alexandra Avenue.
• Built the Roads to Aurthurs Seat, Mount Donna Buang, and opened up the Mount Buffalo Platau.
• Dammed the Eurobin Creek on Mt Buffalo to form Lake Catani. Incidently my Dad rode his motorbike across this lake on the ice. (I have a photo to prove it)
• Around 1900 Catani designed and built the StKilda foreshore and the laid out the Gardens at the end of Fitzroy Street, later named the Catani Gardens.
• Catani also has a small town named after him in South Gippsland.

If you’d like to know more a quick Google search of his name will fill in some gaps.

Now enough of the drivel. The important bit; the cache:

You’ll find it at S38 11.(630 plus Hughes)
