Wodehouse Karst Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Paraseekers: This karst formation, complete with disappearing stream and emergent waterfall, always amazes us. Today we removed the physical caches, so perhaps the opportunity is now there for someone to place an Earthcache in this special place. [;)] Thank you to everyone who made the effort to explore this interesting area.

Geocache Description:

Wodehouse Creek Area

Hidden Treasures in Grey #4

Both stages in this multi-stage cache are small camouflaged Lock 'n Lock containers. The first is hidden in the area of a pond near a disappearing creek. At this stage you will find the coordinates for the Final.

The Ministry of Natural Resources manages 314 hectares and the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority manages 30 hectares in this area of geological importance. The area is used for hiking, forestry, hunting, trapping, and includes a portion of the Bruce Trail.

This karst site includes the finest assemblage of suffusion sinkholes in Southern Ontario, and a disappearing creek (the Wodehouse Creek streamsink). The streamsink ends in a blind valley. The pond itself is a perched pond, and is not connected hydrologically to a sinkhole. At the west end of the pond, you can look down into the sinkhole itself where the stream disappears, 20 feet lower.

With this multi-stage cache, we’ve tried to introduce you to both ends of the karst feature of a disappearing and re-emerging creek. Once you’ve discovered the first stage of the cache, you’ll then be taken to the area where the creek emerges as a small cascade down the slopes of the valley. We’ve provided you with the coordinates for two parking lots. Use the first parking area for the first stage; use the second parking area for the final stage. For the final stage, be sure to follow the white blazes indicating the Bruce Trail. The cache is located not far off of the trail on public lands. However, since the Bruce Trail does pass through some private lands, be sure to respect private property on your journey to the final cache location.

There is a significant amount of hiking with this cache, particularly with the second stage. Please do not attempt to "bushwhack" a shorter route to the final location. There are private lands interspersed with the public lands in this area, and we do not wish any geocachers to inadvertently trespass on neighbouring lands. Also, taking our indicated route introduces you to a great view of Old Baldy in Beaver Valley, and gives you a full appreciation of the cascade that emerges from the escarpment.

Please ensure that you carefully conceal both stages when you replace them.

A special thank you to Valleyone for helping us to better understand the geology of this important area.

Good luck, and remember to practise Cache In, Trash Out!

*Congratulations to Dollars and Sense for being FTF!
