Geocache Description:

Westward Ho

Here, outside Lone Pine, CA, is the area known as the Alabama Hills. Early on in California movie history the industry discovered this site and found that it was a perfect setting for popular western films. We are drawn here by the strange beauty of the place and the mystique of being where our childhood heroes played out their stories. We love them all: Gene Autry, Hop-Along Cassidy, Roy Rogers and Randolph Scott. But John Wayne is our favorite and we dedicate this cache to him.
It was in 1935 that Republic Pictures filmed Westward Ho, starring John Wayne, at this location. In Westward Ho Wayne plays John Wyatt whose hatred of lawlessness was born when as a boy, traveling west with his family, his parents and all hands were killed by raiders and on a whim the raiders took his younger brother, Jim, with them. Since his youth John has been searching for his lost brother, always afraid that he may find Jim among the outlaws. Now, years later in post-Civil War California, John Wyatt assumes the task of ridding the gold camps of the lawless element preying on the citizens. He organizes a vigilante group, The Singing Riders, identified by their white horses and similar dress.

We've relived this movie by taking our own "then-and-now" photos. The original cache contains a collection of four "stills" from Westward Ho. Each features the coordinates for the scene's camera location. You're invited to follow along with the camera crew and take your own location shots. You are welcome to keep one of the four booklets of stills or return them for others to enjoy.
