Geocache Description:

A cache celebrating our first anniversary. This is the second in our series of historic churches to celebrate the day we got married.

In 1913 lumber magnate R. A. Long bought 1780 acres of land in Lees Summit Missouri to build a farm for his daughter Loula Long-Combs, a world renown champion horse rider. Loula helped establish the American Royal Show. One thing that I find interesting is all her horses had names that ended with "ion". You can see the names of many of her horses on the street names in the neighborhood. ?

This historic chapel was built as part of "The World's Most Beautiful Farm" and served the employees who lived on the farm. The first service was in December of 1915 and was presided by Dr. George Combs. The building served as church, school and social center for the farm. You could even watch a movie here in the basement once a week. The gate house across the street served as a parsonage.

In 1975 a fire burned the chapel and it was only through the efforts of the congregation that the chapel was salvaged and repaired. At this time the chapel was deeded to the congregation and it became Longview Chapel Christian Church. During the 80's the church was placed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings.

?

By 1994 with the farm abandoned the chapel membership was down to twelve families. The congregation decided they had enough money left for one more year of salary for a minister. It was fortunate that the congregation made this decision because over the next five years membership exploded to 147 families. By 2001 the Fellowship Hall addition was complete and the second phase of building began.
