Geocache Description:

**The original cache was muggled twice, so it has been moved to new coordinates, but is not very far from its original spot. More difficult hide, so I kicked up the rating. Let me know if it is too high or low.**
Located along Route 66, the cache is a small Bison tube. Bring your own pencil. You will have water all around you, but you won’t get wet. Parking located within 100 feet of cache. Sorry, not wheelchair accessible. The park is closed from midnight to sunrise. Enjoy the view!

Located in the northeastern part of Carthage, Kellogg Lake Park contains a 25 acre fishing lake, and is bordered by Spring River and Missouri Highway 96. Historic Route 66 runs through the park along Spring River. Turtles, fish and water fowl call Kellogg Lake home. The lake was a winter home for a few bald eagles a few years ago, and we have hopes they will revisit. The park has recently undergone major renovations which have really improved its appearance, and have made it a great place to picnic, fish, or just park and relax. The Carthage R-9 School District has placed an ‘Outdoor Classroom’ here alongside an area left undisturbed so students can study nature. The Carthage High School ‘Stream Team’ keeps an eye on water quality here to help insure a healthy environment for animals and people alike. If you follow ‘Route 66’ in the park toward the south, it will dead end in a parking area near a shelter. A short walk south will take you to the footings of the bridge that carried ‘Route 66’ traffic over Spring River many years ago. Watching and listening to the water at the man-made falls here can be very relaxing. You will often find swimmers here seeking shelter from the summer heat.

If you have time, check out the marker set in the park which gives you a few details about the community of Carthage and the county of Jasper, and their history. A Blue Star Memorial Highway tribute marker to the Armed Forces is also located here.

Cache is placed with the kind permission of Carthage Parks and Recreation Director Alan Bull...thanks Alan!

No room for swag.
