Welkom bij het Koepeltje op de Tankenberg. De Tankenberg is de hoogste 'berg' van Overijssel (ca 85m boven NAP). Het is de top van de Oldenzaalse stuwwal, die wordt gevormd samen met drie andere 'bergen.
Een stuwwal is een verhoging in het landschap (een heuvelrug) die gevormd is doordat een gletsjer de ondergrond voor zich uit stuwde. Een stuwwal lag oorspronkelijk langs of voor een gletsjer, de plek waar de gletsjer zelf lag was juist een verlaging in het landschap, een zogenaamd glaciaal bekken.
De flinke hoogte verschillen die in het oost Twentse landschap worden gevonden, zijn te danken aan de stuwwal, die ruim 100.000 jaar geleden in de voorlaatste ijstijd werd gevormd door gletsjers, die vanuit Scandinavië tot halfweg ons land schoven. De wel 100 meter hoge ijsmassa's ploegden zich door rivierdalen en laagtes, stuwden de grond opzij en voor zich uit, zo werden wallen in het landschap gevormd. Rotsdelen worden afgebroken en meegenomen; vermorzeld tot keien en leem; in Twente achtergelaten in de vorm van zwerfkeien, grind en kleileem. Onder deze lagen bevindt zich een kern van vette, donkere klei, gevormd door een tropische zee, die miljoenen jaren geleden boven dit deel van ons land golfde

Welcome to 'het Koepeltje' (the dome) at the Tankenberg. The Tankenberg is the highest 'mountain' of Overijssel (app. 85m above NAP). It is the top of the Oldenzaalse pushed moraine, which is formed with three other 'mountains'.
A push moraine or pushed moraine is in geomorphology a moraine (a landform formed by glacial processes) that formed when a lowland glacier pushed large amounts of soft, sedimentary rocks in front of it. Pushed moraines generally occur in low, flat plains at higher lattitudes and were formed during the glacial stages of the Quarternary ice age. They can be up to 100 km long and several hundreds of meters in height.
Pushed moraines can be found in the North-American plains, in Siberia and in Northern Europe. They were formed during cool, glacial stages, when glaciers advanced and covered large parts of North America and Eurasia. In soms regions pushed moraines of more than one glacial stage can be recognized, or different generations from a single glacial phase. Since new glacial advanced tend to destroy older pushed moraines, most were formed during the last (110.000 to 10.000 years ago) or second-last (238.000 to 128.000 years ago) glacial advances.
The differences in hight in east Twente are the result of a pushed moraine which was formed 100.000 years ago in the glacial stage by glaciers coming from Scandinavia towards our country. Up to 100m high ice was plowing through river valleys, pushing the ground aside and in front, forming the walls in the landscape. Rock parts were crushed into pebbles and loam; in Twente left behind as stray pebbles, grit and clayloam. Beneath these layers there's a core of a fat dark clay, formed by a tropical sea, which was in this part of the country million years ago.

- When you are standing in 'Het Koepeltje', you can look over the 'valley'. Estimate the distance from where you are standing to the lowest part of the 'valley'.
