Geocache Description:

Part of a nice walk along the Coastal Path and helps to link the walk up with plastic. A great viewpoint for watching dolphins and the like out in the bay. Take great care when clambering the rock, they can get wet with tide and spray, hence the difficulty rating.

Was out walking the new Team Shampogs cachehound puppy and used this large lump of rock as the hiding place for her initiation into the hide and seek game of find the elusive tupperware. She found the box a couple of times but decided to leave it in place at the last attempt so that someone else could discover it.

Noticed that there are the rusting remains of steel rings set into the rock on the landward side which look like they may have held an ariel or a flagpole or similar in years gone by. Guessing it was probably as part of the old airfield - HMS Jackdaw - at the top of the slope to the westward.

Got the following additional info from Allieballie and decided to add it to the cachepage for the info of all.

Kilminning Castle is not a real castle - it is actually a sandstone sea stack. The RAF used it for bombing practice during WW2 - however they bombed it with bags of flour rather than anything more dangerous!

Its not known if there was ever a real castle here. There is a rock with circular markings near the fence at N56 16.115 W002 35.779 which certainly looks man-made and if you walk down the fenceline to the cache there are what appears to be a line of stones laid next to each other - Wonder if it was perhaps the remains of a wall, or maybe it’s just a freak of nature? There is also historical evidence that man had used this site in the past - ancient stone burial chambers called cists that have been found opposite the rock, but no one could track down any evidence of a real castle having been situated here.

Limited parking at the caravan site but its closed to touring vans from late October to mid March. Not sure about the parking in the closed season, so best to be considerate.
