Geocache Description:

Hemlanden

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The old trading post Birka, at the northern part of the island Björkö, was established around year 790, and is today one of Sweden's most well-known and visited World Heritage sites. During the latter half of the 10th century the people of Birka left the town for reasons unknown. The monk Ansgar arrived to Birka in the middle of the 9th century, to spread the Christian gospels. Still most of the people living here were heathens. We know this by studying the close to 3000 graves at the large grave-fields east of the town, the Homelands (Hemlanden). Here the traces of 200 years of urbanity are more visible than on any other place on the island. So if you visit Björkö and Birka, don't miss a walk up to the Homelands, to experience a time long gone.
