Geocache Description:

Easy terrain; Drive up.

This Cache is in honor of George John Roussos who was 13 when he left his native Greece to come to America. He’d been living with his grandparents in the small town of Kyparissia, Greece. Following the footsteps of a father he’d never known, he made the 11-day journey to New York’s Ellis Island by himself.

George travelled across the U.S. ending up with family in Seminole, Oklahoma. He couldn’t speak a word of English. To learn English, and continue his schooling, George started school in Seminole. Beginning with first grade, and spending two to three weeks in each early grade, George reached sixth grade within the year. He started East High School and worked in a restaurant mornings, at noon, and at night while attending school. He completed 12 grades in six years.

George became a U.S. citizen, joined the Navy and was decorated for bravery in anti-submarine patrol flights. He met his wife Zenia while stationed in South Carolina. In 1954 George and Zenia moved to Mobile, Alabama and started his career in the restaurant business with a place called Harry’s. By 1960 George relocated to the causeway in Spanish Fort, Alabama and regulars will remember that Silver King restaurant. In 1964, a neighboring restaurant burned and George, always ready to help others who worked as hard as he did, joined forces with them becoming the Sea Ranch. In 1973, and still on the causeway, George finally opened a restaurant named after himself. All of his hard work was washed away just six years later when, in 1979, Hurricane Frederick tore through the Gulf Coast and completely flattened everything on the causeway.

Nothing was left of his restaurant but its sign and a stubborn safe. But George never let defeat stop him. He moved to somewhat higher ground - Royal Street in downtown Mobile, Alabama - and rebuilt his business. George Roussos passed away in January of 2000. He was 82 years old and worked hard until just days before his passing. He leaves behind a legacy to be proud of.

George was an active member of the Mobile community, deeply involved in area charities, AHEPA and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. On July 7, 1998, his 81st birthday, Mobile honored George as the city's oldest independent restaurant owner.

About Mr. George's home town - Kyparissia - The origin of Kyparissia’s name dates back to ancient times. It was inhabited by the Roman, Byzantine, Frankish and Ottoman empires. Kyparissia did not become Greek again until the late 1820s during the Greek War of Independence of 1821.
