Michigan Craft Brewing: Mitten Mill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ypsi Gizmo: We visited today and indeed the container and all contents were gone. The location where the cache was hidden isn't quite as good for a placement as it was when we first put this one out. We looked around for a while for alternative hiding spots, but couldn't come up with one that we were satisfied with. So we'll archive this one... thanks to everyone who searched it out!

Geocache Description:

This series celebrates Michigan craft brewing. Hides in this series are located near or on the premises of craft beer locations, but none require entering the establishments to make the find.

Craft brews, sometimes called microbrews, are beers made in smaller batches by independent brewers. The state of Michigan updated its brewing license laws in 1993, launching a burgeoning industry of microbreweries, brewpubs, and suppliers of home brewing enthusiasts. As of 2008, there are over 70 microbreweries and brewpubs in the state of Michigan. Most serve some sort of food and non-alcoholic beverages, and many are family-friendly during daytime hours. Dozens of Michigan home brewing clubs meet regularly to share recipes and techniques. Craft beer festivals and competitions are held across the state throughout the year.

lauter tun This brewery and restuarant is located on the former site of a woolen mill that was active until 1939. As of the posting of the geocache in 2008, the head brewer is the president of the Michigan Brewers Guild, a statewide association of professional brewers and enthusiasts. The establishment has approximately a dozen of its own brews on tap at any given time, sometimes including one or more organic beers. The location was one of the first microbreweries in the state to return to the use of (specially lined) cans for distribution of some of their beverages, in addition to the usual six pack of bottles. Show up on Sunday through Thursday and you can treat yourself to a free game of pool.

NOTES: No need to bother the vegetation to find this one. There should be pencils in the cache, but just in case, you may wish to bring your own writing implement.
