Geocache Description:

To commemorate Emily's first real arctic trip

This is a commemoration of my daughter's first trek north of the Arctic Circle. She is the last of the four kids to north of the circle with dad on a business trip. Our trip to Iglulik was aborted when the aircraft did not arrive, so we set our cache free here under the watchful eye of a long term employee of the local DEW line site (and a friend from high school).

Our chosen spot is close to the site of the aborted windmill site (too cold to operate!) and close to the ruined stone church (to cold to pray?). It is accessible by truck ,skidoo or ATV or even a walk across the bay (winter only unless walking on water is in your bag of tricks) and in clear sight of the community across the small bay. The area is well signed with historical information and a wonderful place to take in a sunset over the town (but not in winter...unless you are patient!).

Cambridge Bay was the site of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Hudson's Bay Company outposts established during the 1920s. Following World War II a LORAN tower was built near the previous location of Cambridge Bay and a DEW Line site established in 1955. The tower, easily seen for many miles around in the largely flat landscape was to be torn down some yearsa ago. The local population protested as it has become an important landmark to guide people home. So there it sits, close to our cache.

Unlike the majority of the DEW Line radar sites which were abandoned or automated, this site, known as CAM-MAIN, remains a manned operation. IN fact my buddy works there! The military presence and the services and economy this represented acted as a magnet for Inuit who had previously used the area as a temporary site for meeting, hunting, fishing and trade, and a permanent community was soon established.

SHould be accessible year round given how windy the spot is, but time will tell. Cache is a smallish rubbermaid containter with green camo tape. Contains a few northern pins and a few unnorthern stickers. Also contains a log, but I forgot a pencil so bring your own. Could handle a TB or two.

This is part of my series of accessbile Nunavut caches under tyhe supervision and care of interested locals. Hooked my buddy and his wife by seeking out Dew drop in cache.
