Story of a village called Haga Haga

In the early years when transport and roads were primitive, many farmers in the midlands acquired farms at the coast for winter grazing of livestock. Farmers together with their families would move to the coast lock, stock and barrel and as motor vehicles in those days were a luxury the only alternative mode of conveyance was by ox-wagon. Roads were almost non-existent and wagons were required to travel diverse routes in order to reach the coast. On arrival at Haga Haga the wagons had to negotiate the very risky sandy beach crossing of the river mouth. As the wagons were heavily laden, one span of 16 oxen was insufficient for the heavy crossing of the river. Therefore the driver of wagon number two would disconnect his span and the driver of number one would give the instruction to the number 2 driver to "HAKA HAKA" which is the Xhosa word for "HOOK ON, HOOK ON" and thus the two spans (32 oxen) were combined to hauling the wagon across the sandy beach. And that is how the resort became HAGA HAGA.
