Geocache Description:

Cache is a camoflaged ammo can located in Bruggeman Park in rural Black Hawk County. Park at the recommended parking location and bushwhack in, about .2 miles to the cache location. There was a pretty fair deer trail back the day we placed it. Replace the "sno-flage" or add some geoflage once spring comes. Be prepared to get your feet wet during warmer months.

This cache is near a deer bed I spotted as I was looking for a good cache location. This area of Black Hawk County along the Wapsi River is known for its healthy whitetail deer population. As you walk back to the cache, you may see other evidence of the local deer -- scrapes during the fall rut, antler sheds in winter, deer tracks -- and perhaps you'll even surprise a big buck or some does.

Whitetail deer are wily in ways to keep warm during winter. Small deer families cluster together. The does stay with their sisters and fawns. The big bucks go away with other males--or maybe alone. During winter storms, the whitetails know to lie low--hardly moving at all.

All winter long, the food hunt goes on. The deer choose shelter close to grounds where they feed. Every day--except in great storms--whitetails hunt for food. The deer nibble many kinds of twigs and the needles of some evergreen trees.

As the winter progresses, the does and fawns congregate in large groups know as "yards." Young bucks often gather in "bachelor groups." By late winter, there's little good food to be found--especially if there are too many deer around. Food is scarce, no matter how high they stretch or how deep they paw. Deer must turn to "junk food" such as tree bark to survive.

Original cache contents include a finger flashlight for the FTF, Chomping at the Bit Travel Bug, the Seasick Rubber Ducky Travel Bug, Alberta GAS 2007 Geocoin, and several items for trade. FTF. please check the coords as the sky was overcast. The ammo can is new, so it's a little difficult to open. Pull hard!

Bruggeman Park is a public hunting area, so it is recommended that you wear blaze orange during hunting seasons. There is a shooting range in the park. The park is not maintained during the winter. The park may not be accessible during high water.
