Geocache Description:

Old abandoned tracks in Madison, IN that offer a great view of some local geology and this awesome geocache.

This Geocache is along a strip of abandoned railroad track that has become quite unusable in some places due to rock slides and washouts. Before you try this geocache you must first decide where to start at. The short way has you parking some where around the intersection of St. Rd. 7 and Cragmont. The long way takes you up from the bottom of Madison and you should park in an area that allows you to get access to the Railroad track. I was picked up at wall street near the bottom of the hill by St. Rd. 56

In places the brush is overgrown but you should be able to get through either way. I myself have made trails where there weren't any and i plan to maintain the trails as best as I can for everyones enjoyment.

The reason I picked this area is because it has three things. One its secluded so very little muggle traffic if any. It takes you to see some cool geology such as fossil layers and in some places flowstone which usually only appears in cave situations but is found around the base of a tree and is about 4 meters tall (about 12 to 15 feet) The third reason is that you get to see a part of Madison, IN that few people have been able to see since the railroads decommisioned the tracks.

Your looking for an ammo can and there is no climbing involved up the alcove where the cache is.

Since I graduated with a degree in Geology I figured that my first to find prize should reflect some aspect that I enjoy in geology. Also, since I feel this is a little more out of the way than your average geocache I have decided that the first Eight to find get one of my first finds from hunting for interesting and fun fossils. I have used a plaster casting process to copy one of my favorite fossils you get to find out what that is on your own so enjoy!

As with all the geocaches that I plan to place, I did so, so that the happy geocacher can take the time to enjoy the scenery Its a lost art on some people and one of the most enjoyable things we can do for free.
