Geocache Description:

The cache will take less than an hour from the starting point and is suitable for children (but not with strollers) and geohounds.

This cache is ideally started from the centre of Cranbrook and the recommended starting point is a car park next to St Dunstan's church (N 51 05.872 E 000 32.129). In medieval times Cranbrook was the centre of the cloth industry in The Weald. The church, St Dunstan's, is known as “The Cathedral of the Weald” and was completed in the 15th Century.

The Old English meaning of Cranbrook was “cran broc” meaning “Crane Marsh” – cranes frequenting the marsh. Back in the 12th Century it was Cranebroca before evolving into the current spelling.

From the car park go out through the higher end (away from the road) towards the play area for children. Then head left passing the Bowls Club on your right hand side. After the gate Cranbrook Primary School becomes visible and then head along a path to the right (path starts at N 51 05.977 E 000 32.159). Follow this path until it opens into a field where the path will fork into two routes. Either route is possible but heading left is more direct until arriving at a busy road – the A229 (please take care when crossing and head straight on through the gate). Continue for several hundred yards around to the left until a house becomes visible at the end of the track. Some distance before the house the public footpath diverts from the track to the left and is well fenced in as you continue down into a valley and up the other side. Please do not feed the horses on your left! At the other side of the valley head to the right where the public footpath splits into two.

The cache is near the lone footpath marker in the centre of Gravel Pit Wood.

There is a badge for the First To Find.
