Geocache Description:

The coordinates will, of course, lead you to a geocache. But, they will also bring you to a very cool building that was once a mecca of entertainment for the town of Springfield.

Originally this was the Mars Theater Company. The theater opened in 1946 and remained in business until the 1957. I have been told that you could see a motion picture movie in color for twenty-five cents and get a bag of popcorn for ten cents. It seems that love stories, westerns and war movies were the most popular here. “Love Is A Many Splendored Thing” was a very popular one for my mother. This was the only movie she ever paid to watch three times for two days in a row.

After the theater closed this building was converted into office space and through the years suffered the damage of neglect as unfortunately many of our historic buildings seem to do. The building housed offices for many years. But, it remained tall and proud part of Springfield history. Maybe not everyone knew it was once a beautiful theater full of stories, excitement, love, fun and dreams glimmering from the silver screen. But, I always knew the history. My mother loved telling me of the good times she had at the theater as a child. This place was one of the best highlights of my mother’s childhood in Springfield.

Recently, the Mars Theater building has been purchased by the Springfield Revitalization Corporation and it will be restored to its original splendor (you like that one mom?) and be used again as a functional theater, which is sure to establish Springfield as an active arts community.

There is still much work to be completed in order to restore this beautiful piece of Springfield history to its original glory. But, efforts are well underway. The Tybee Post Theater has donated three hundred seats, letters for the marquee and an old fashioned popcorn machine and the Springfield Revitalization Corporation is hard at work to make this a mecca of entertainment once again.

I don’t think we will enjoy twenty-five cent movies and ten cent popcorn any time soon. But, I can’t wait to see the Mars Theater live again.

This geocache container was my golden ammo award which was given to me by my SCGA friends for finding my 1000th geocache. Since the ammo can is golden, I could think of no better place to leave it than this golden mecca of silver screen history.

Please take note that you do not need to go behind the building in order to locate this geocache. Definitely remember that a geocache can not be near the rail road tracks and this cache is no exception. Do Not go near the rail road, which is beyond the back of the building.

The First To Find will find a special little prize, just for them. A tiny trophy and an unactivated 4x4 geocoin.

Congratulations to Vinyl Slider (all the way from Texas) for FTF.
