Geocache Description:

On the Cross Rivendell Trail. Vershire Ctr is not separated from Vershire in the Vermont 251+4.

This cache is near the parking and kiosk for the Cross Rivendell Trail. There are no parking coords as they are within about 50 feet of the cache and I think you can do the calculation yourself. The cache is a micro for now but that may change later. I can't say if the parking is cleared in the winter. The view is nice here but I think it is better a little farther up the trail so feel free to wander on .

The straight dope:
Chartered: August 3, 1781 (Vermont Charter)
Area: 23,146 Acres = 36.17 Square Miles [ Size Rank: 174* ]
Coordinates (Geographic Center): 72°19''W 43°58'N
Altitude: 1,200 feet ASL
Population (US Census, 2000): 629 [ Population Rank: 202* ]

The papers of Surveyors General James Whitelaw and Ira Allen show that, prior to its actual granting, the town was referred to as Number 7. The commonly accepted explanation for the current name is that it was coined by the Legislature, combining VER(mont) and (New Hamp)SHIRE. The name was changed to Ely in 1878 (see The Ely War), and back to Vershire in 1882 (not to be confused with the village of Ely in Fairlee.
