Geocache Description:

I have hiked into the Kiakho Lakes a couple times and decided to take a cache with me this time and place it somewhere along the rugged shoreline.Previous ventures down into the lakes involved bushwhacking down perilously steep slopes including the day this cache was placed but we stumbled onto a major trail as we neared the lakeshore which can be used to access this cache minus the bushwhack. It is still very steep through one section but affords ease of access right up to the area where this cache is hidden.

Turns out the trail leads to an old prospect shaft dug into the slopeside on the eastern shore of the largest of the Kiakho Lakes and even has a small flat area where one could pitch a tent for an overnight campout! This trail also passes through a gully filled with some large timber and surprisingly enough a grove of western red cedars which seem out of place with the surrounding forests.

Be warned-if you want to explore these lakes further the eastern shoreline is a mess of blown down timber on steep terrain and is very tough trekking. You are better off to gain the southern end of the long lake and use the western shoreline to explore the area more.

The south end of the Kiakho Lakes also has good access on old roads and trails but I have not used it in many years and can't remember how to access it.

Container is a tin can with log and trade items plus an american one dollar bill for the first to find.

Access is via the Fassiferne Forest Service Road west of Cranbrook off Highway 3.Park nearby at a log landing or along the roadside.
Trail begins on a skid road at a large stump(N49 29.414-W115 53.609)
