Geocache Description:

This is one of six caches including a bonus cache placed around Caradon hill based on a mining theme. You will need to visit and collect the part coordinates from the five of the caches to locate the bonus. The caches are labelled 1 to 5 and are on a circular of about 4.1 miles or 6.7km from the suggested parking area. A lot of the tracks and paths you will need to follow are old mine railways, leats and quarry tracks, so sensible footwear is a must.

Holman’s engine house was part of the South Caradon Mines. The mine was formed in 1833 when Capt. Peter Clymo and his son James began works on an adit striking eastwards from the Seaton River valley. The story is often told of James Clymo’s offering half of the shares to a fellow traveller in a coach at £5 each. The gentleman refused and within a few months the same shares were trading at £2,000 apiece after the rich copper lodes were found
By the mid-1850s the mine was employing 600 people and was key to the development of the nearby villages of Crows Nest, Pensilva Darite and Minions. In 1868 the total of ore sold by South Caradon Mine amounted to 1.65 million and the output of the mine in 1873 was larger than any other mine in Cornwall.
The engine house closest to the cache is Holman’s and the less intact engine house to the left is Rule’s.
Holman's 70" engine was installed in 1875 as a result of the adjacent Rule's shaft engine being unable to keep up with the load. In 1887 the engine was sold and moved to Wheal Grenville near Camborne. Rules engine house was demolished as part of a military exercise, leaving just part of the wall still standing to full height.

Please note that on this part of the moor the weather can change very quickly, so always go prepared.
