Geocache Description:

The above co-ordinates are for suggested parking. The walk is just under 1.5 miles and along the highest cycle path in Abbey Meads, making it ideal for walking, bikes and push chairs. The walk will give you a splendid view over Abbey Meads and North Swindon and is just as good at anytime of the day or night and some beautiful sunsets can be seen from here. There is street lighting all the way along the path to the cache and visit on November 5th for a free firework display!

A Simple 4 stage Multi-Cache. You are looking for a small plastic container in a camo bag - high degree of stealth is required near the Cache as muggles will come at you from all directions.

HISTORY
The Abbey Meads development started around 1995 and the last houses were built around 2005 and at the time it was one of the biggest housing projects in Europe? It has a village centre with Shops, 2 Pubs, a Church, Doctors surgery, Dentist and two Primary Schools.

Abbey Meads itself now occupies what was, until recent times, farmland and meadows. The nearby village of Blunsdon dates back to the Iron Age. Blunsdon Abbey was a prominent landmark in the area and inspired the title of the Abbey Meads development. The historic old ruins of the Abbey are now used as a site for motor homes situated on Tadpole Lane next to St Andrew's Church. A former Manor house, known as The Grange stood near the Abbey, it is now a listed building and converted into apartments.

The futuristic Motorola production plant in Abbey Meads was used for a setting of a Turkish Oil refinery in the Bond Film, The World Is Not Enough (released 1999).

In 1997 Roman remains were discovered by a digger driver preparing the ground for house building at Abbey Meads. In 1998 they were saved from destruction after English Nature and Swindon Council came up with the £954,000 asking price for the site. Early investigation suggested the remains were a palatial villa. Further archaeological digging revealed a 10 acre complex of shrines, terraced gardens and pools built around springs emerging from Blunsdon Ridge. In 2003, the Groundwell remains attracted the attention of Channel 4's Time Team, Tony Robinson filmed at the North Swindon site over the weekend of their 'Big Dig' on 28 and 29 June.
