SQ - East Cleveland Township Cemetery Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

TeamDotOne: We are very saddened to have to archive this one, but in an effort to make room for a special Memorial Day C.I.T.O. event cache, we need to remove it. We definitely plan on bringing this one back in one form or another, since it was located outside the gates and available even in times when the gates are locked and you couldnt access the other caches in the cemetery. So, keep an eye on this space in the future :)

Thank you all who have come out to search for this one, and all those that found it during the many C.I.T.O. and other fun events we have had here :)

Geocache Description:

This cache was placed for the (GC1FR83) East Cleveland Township Cemetery CITO event held November 9, 2008.

You are seeking a small cache container that is hidden with permission from the ECTC Foundation in a part of the cemetery that is accessible even when the gates are closed. Please be respectful of all your surroundings, and keep your caching to daylight hours only. The cemetery is open between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

This beautiful old Cemetery is located on East 118th Street in the midst of a busy urban area of Cleveland, Ohio. For the most part, the Cemetery is inactive, there are very few new burials. The Cemetery is now owned and operated by the East Cleveland Township Cemetery Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to own and maintain the East Cleveland Township Cemetery as a historic landmark, to restore, preserve and share the cemetery’s pioneer Victorian heritage and to build a solid financial foundation for the cemetery’s future. As of this date over 18,000 people have been confirmed to be buried in East Cleveland Cemetery. It is believed there are additional individuals not yet identified.

Some of the more important burials and memorials in the East Cleveland Township Cemetery include: grandparents of 'Buffalo' Bill Cody, Edward Hoffman who died as a result of the Central Viaduct Disaster of 1895, Captain John Grady who was a fireman that died as a result of a fire, some of the children who died as a result of the 1908 Collinwood School Fire, some of the victims of the Cleveland Clinic Fire, and lots of others of importance and interest.
