Geocache Description:

This is now a micro cache containing a log scroll - better bring your own pencil.

The SQ in the cache name signifies ‘Spirit Quest’. Please be respectful of the area, and observe any rules and posted hours.

When Tony was a kid, he and his friends rode their bikes up and down these hills. Both members of team TonyG. have parents and other loved ones buried here. Before the subdivisions came along, just a few years ago, there was nothing but farmland surrounding this cemetery.

People began to settle in the area around 1834. The name of the village changed a few times and eventually became Dryden, after the English poet, John Dryden. At the first town meeting in 1837 an order was passed offering a bounty of two dollars for each wolf that was killed in the township.

A variety of businesses were built in the early years, including two blacksmith shops, a broom and ink factory, soap factory, millinery, tailor, wagon shop, and a tin shop that made pails and pans. In 1854, the Dryden Exchange Hotel was built on the northeast corner of Main and Mill Streets.

In 1883, the P O & N Railroad, which ran from Pontiac to Caseville, came through the village. The railroad grade, now the Polly Ann Trail, runs along the west side of the cemetery. In 1979 the depot was moved next to the library, near the southwest corner of Main and Mill Streets. It now houses a museum. This location also displays two Michigan Historical Markers.
