Geocache Description:

This is the site where Juan Bautista de Anza camped in 1776 on his way to San Francisco.

The Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail is a 1,210-mile United States national historic trail that runs from Nogales, Arizona, on the U.S.-Mexico border, to San Francisco, California. The Trail commemorates the 1775–1776 route that Spanish commander Juan Bautista de Anza took on his way to build a presidio and mission near San Francisco Bay. Info on Expedition Camp Location #76: Goleta Beach County Park, the U.C. Santa Barbara campus, and the Santa Barbara Airport are the sites of the Chumash villages of Mescalitán (Camp #76). "Here there are three large villages on the banks of the estuary, the largest one being on the road which we are traveling." Mescalitán is commemorated with a plaque along the Coast Route Trail at South Patterson Ave. and the Atascadero Creek Bikeway in Goleta.
