The Arthur Ewell
Reservation is a scenic 32 acre upland Essex County Greenbelt Association
property that consists of white pine stands, Upper Mill Pond of the
Mill River system, and a field with paddock maintained by the
Rowley Riding and Driving Club. The Reservation is both
summer home and migratory stop over for many eastern flyway
waterfowl. The Association encourages hiking, birding,
nature viewing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and fishing.
The area's well marked trailhead, with two vehicle parking, is
just off the north bound side of State Route 133 and conveniently
only a mile away from Exit 54 of Interstate 95 toward Rowley.
Although scheduled equestrian events take place in the paddock and
field, the wooded trails are off limits to horses. During events,
the trailhead gate is often opened for parking nearer the
paddock.
The HEA Livery is a short walk from the parking area. The
container was originally stocked with a dozen Safari Ltd.
miniature horses for trade, but the theme need not be adhered to.
Geocoins are the coin of the realm with a have a coin, leave a
coin; need a coin, take a coin policy. The grooms and valets do
appreciate an optional geocoin tip for exceptional services
rendered.
Continuing along to the pictureque pond side trail after your
Livery visit will bring you to the
Happy Ever After TB Hotel by Fismo. Their team
consists of Simon the scottish terrier and his humans,
Wayne & Sharyn. These folks are among the longest
active cachers in the area, starting their geocaching in 2001 and
maintaining their Groundspeak Charter Membership over the
years. These avid winter cachers deployed one of the oldest hides
in the area, the now archived
double trouble (GC2DF3). Their replacement for this cache,
No More Troubles (GC66B4) is one of our favorites. They are
consistant hiders of a limited number of quality old school caches.
We are deploying this trailhead/parking marker hide in honor of
Fismo to thank them for blazing the geotrail for the
rest of us to follow and for getting on their horses to pace
their way to 3,000 finds!
We hope you enjoy your stay at the Happy Ever After
facilities!
NOTE: The parking area is not usually
plowed in winter.

History of Livery
Stables
Hotel livery stables date back to the start
of the carriage age in the middle ages with equestrian travelers
requiring a place to board their horses while staying at an inn
along trips of more than a sojourn. Postal road delivery service
routes (such as nearby U.S. Highway 1) expanded the lucrative
livery business of the 18th century coach age with the need of
fresh horses along a route. Train service (such as the nearby
Newburport line of the old Eastern Railroad Company)
encroached on stage and post road traffic during the 19th century.
The coach business suffered a set back as train service
overshadowed liveries along old routes and only destination livery
stables providing hackney service, horses for hire, and caring of
horses in an owner's absence prevailed. The automobile age of the
20th century ended the livery stable business for all but the
pleasure horse side of things, as personal stables became the home
garages of motorized vehicles with equestrians seeking permanent
horse boarding outside city limits.
