Dryden Tract (Alps Woods) 110 hectares
Description: Short steep hills of red oak - white ash - red maple - sugar maple - white oak - hickory with intervening local lowlying wet areas, dominate this tract. Alp's Woods consists of two large blocks of forest situated on a strongly rolling kame moraine. The various stands composing the woods are dominated by overstorey and understorey plants which are characteristic of upland sites in the southern deciduous forest region. In total, 16 different forest stands, as well as a few small pine plantations and successional thicket communities were identified. Some of the valley bottoms and depressions in the moraine serve as intermittent drainage channels; however, as these are very restricted no distinct plant communities on wet-mesic or wet sites were observed.
Alp's Woods is situated on a composite moraine system formed by two closely aligned ridges known as the Galt and Paris moraines. The moraine in this area is very irregular, with steep side slopes (up to 80%), small kettle valleys, and complex relief patterns. Soils tend to be very coarse, being composed of stony till, with boulders common throughout.
