Geocache Description:

Stainton is at the end of the watered part of the Lancaster canal and is a lovely place for a walk. Unusually, the canal tow path is not the only option and a very nice circular walk can be done.

A couple of nearby caches already exist and this cache adds to the group. It's placed to encourage you to explore the 'thumb' path - opposite of the toe path?! Park at the end of the canal, N 54° 15.737 W 002° 44.261. We often walk round this route with Safie, which is fairly obvious if you look at an OS map, but here's the description:

From the end of the canal head along the tow path to the steps down to the aqueduct and visit Tashington's cache (PMs only). Then go through the impressive tunnel under the canal. Follow the obvious footpath through the garden (friendly natives) and turn left at the driveway and go to the road. Turn right and follow the road briefly along to the bridge over Stainton Beck.

On the other side of the bridge is an obvious stile. Bare right across the field to another stile which goes up onto the side of the canal and the 'thumb' path. Follow along to the cache site in a wooded area. A small - please re-hide well.

Continue through the wood and up to a narrow squeeze stile - breath in! Turn right, a quick bit of field (ignore the bridge on the right - no access), then a stile onto more thumb path, which goes along the embankment over Tom Beck to Commonmire Lane, Bridge 169 and the Badger's cache. Then just follow the tow path back to the car park (a little slippery in wet weather).

Please note there is no public access to/from the tow path via Bridge 170.
