Historique, history
Constitué sur un ancien lieu de culte avec des terres achetées ou échangées en grande partie avec les seigneurs d’Uxelles, ce centre agricole compte sept moulins et s’étend sur trois paroisses. Malgré une terre relativement pauvre, il fournit une production variée en bois, vin et céréales. Au XIIe et XIIIe s., Saint-Hyppolite accueille parfois des règlements de conflits opposant les moines aux seigneurs voisins comme les châtelains de Brancion-Uxelles. Fortifié au XIIIe s., le doyenné compte avec Mazille parmi les six forteresses que l’abbaye possède dans un rayon de 20 km. Il s’agit d’une pièce stratégique du dispositif domanial des moines dans le Nord-Clunysois.
Made on a former place of worship with land bought or exchanged with much of the lords of Uxelles this agricultural center has seven mills and spread over three parishes. Despite a relatively poor land, it provides a varied production of wood, wine and cereals. In the twelfth and thirteenth century, Saint-Hyppolite hosts some settlement between the monks to neighboring lords like the castle lords of Brancion-Uxelles. Fortified in the thirteenth century, the deanery with Mazille account among the six fortresses that the abbey has a radius of 20 km. It is a strategic piece of the domanial monks in the Northeast Clunysois.
Patrimoine
Les bâtiments du doyenné font partie intégrante d’une propriété privée. Les plus anciens sont datés du XVIe s. ; ils sont établis au sud des vestiges de l’église romane qui semble remonter au début du XIIe s. Si la couverture, la façade et les piliers de l’église à 3 nefs ont disparu, les parties subsistantes restent impressionnantes, d’abord par leurs dimensions (murs de la nef, transept et chœur flanqué de deux absidioles et surmonté d’un clocher reposant sur une coupole sur trompes), mais aussi par les nombreux vestiges de décors peints. On observe également quelques chapiteaux au décor végétal.
Deanery buildings are part of private property. L’église fut englobée à la fin du XIIème siècle dans une puissante fortification On voit encore le clocher construit vers la fin du XIeme, au milieu de la grosse tour rectangulaire qui surmonte le transept. Des colonnes de la nef sont encore visibles à l'entrée d'un pré au midi du porche du doyenné.

Le clocher doit son ampleur inhabituelle à la construction de deux corps de flanquement de part et d’autre du massif quadrangulaire d’origine. Cette fortification donne au clocher une allure de donjon, comme pour défier les châtelains voisins d’Uxelles et de Brancion.
