Geocache Description:

This cache is at the abandoned lead mines on Bonsall moor and one of series of caches in teh area. This series pays tribute to those the spirits of miners which still haunt the moor!

This cache is hidden at the site of one the numerous shallow lead mines which surrounded Bonsall village. The moor above Bonsall is pock-marked with the remains of lead-mines and the village once housed a community of lead-miners and weavers so it mainly comprises rows of small limestone cottages strung out along the sides of the dale in which the village tries to hide Bonsall's geology meant it did not have many deep rich mines as did neighbouring parishes. A fractured displacement of rock, the Bonsall Fault, runs from the Via Gellia out onto Bonsall Moor.

North of the Fault lies the Bonsall Sill, igneous dolerite which restricted the size of ore deposits within the parish; it can be traced up High Street and out to Brightgate. No mines are found in the Sill. Shallow mines were worked on Bonsall Leys in limestones lying above the toadstone, these contained small veins, called `scrins'. But as with all of the Peak District lead mining villages, that industry gradually ended as the mines became unproductive.
