Geocache Description:

Cache is a small tupperware type container. Easily accessible but the surrounding fields do get quite muddy.

Please put the cache back and replace the twigs the way you found them. Thanks.

Kilingworth Lake started off as Killingworth Colliery, also known as West Wallsend Extended, opened in 1892. In December 1910 an explosion wrecked the mine but no lives were lost. It was closed for four years. During this time, in 1912, it was purchased by Caledonian Collieries. Like most mines, it was closed during the depression of the 1930's and re-opened when the war brought a demand for coal. It was then owned by Coal & Allied and was modernized.

After the war the pits became derelict and the land started to subside creating a flash, the result was a stretch of barren marshland.

During heavy rainfall the site would cover some 15 acres of the west township and it was decided to turn the flash into a lake and use it as a surface reservoir which would have a surplus capacity for storing heavy run-off storms. The resulting lake was about 17.5 acres in extent into it is taken the whole surface water run-off from the west side of Killingworth.

When the lake was finished dinghy and yacht sailing was prohibited until weed growth established, however this happened quicker than envisaged. The lake is surrounded by parkland , this land was not intended to be sophisticated urban park, it was designed to be more like a meadow, not being closely cropped and having buttercups and other wild flowers.
