Several access routes exist to this cache, none of which are easy.
Walkers attempting this cache need to be experienced, fit, and
competent navigators. Water can be difficult to find, particularly
in Summer & Autumn.
From west to east runs a foot track, somewhat ambiguous in
places following the 2006 bushfires. This forms part of the
Australian Alps Walking Track, a 650km journey from Walhalla in
Gippsland through to Tharwa, a small town near Canberra. The
terrain between Mt Speculation and Barry Saddle is rough, and
walking speeds are slow, despite the track.
To the south are a couple of untracked ridges and spurs plunging
into the headwaters of the Wonnangatta River, whilst to the north
access may be had along one of the spurs leading from the West
Buffalo River up to the crest of the Great Dividing Range.
Many walkers who reach this destination do so as part of 3-4 day
circuit, departing from the Howitt car park and incorporating
grimly named features such as the Crosscut Saw, Mt Buggery & Mt
Despair. A rapid descent into the Wonnangatta followed by a brisk
climb completes the loop.
Please take care at GZ, as there are cliffs in the area. Good
luck!
