Geocache Description:

Sala gruvby

I stället lät Gustav II Adolf 1624 anlägga Sala stad, dit folket i gruvbyn tvingades flytta.

The town that newer became a town.
Today there are only remains as fundations of the houses and wells.
The workers settled down near the mine and the mine village was established. About 1540, during the days of glory of the mine, there were at least 400 households with about 2000-3000 persons here. The village was of so great importance that Karl XI gave it privileges as city, but it was never confirmed. Instead of that, Gustav II Adolf ,1624, ordered Sala city to be built and the people in the mine village were forced to move.

Archaeological researches have been done two times. First three years 1950-1960 and then 1984 and 1985. The results of the reserches, combined with existing documents from the work in the mine have helped us to know much more about the history of Sala silver mine and the mine village.

N.B. There is barbed wire fence round the area. A way in is at 59 54.228 016 34.612. You can park your car there and there is information about the village.
