Geocache Description:

The Maryland Municipal League Geocache Trail
Celebrating Maryland’s Cities and Towns.
MML District 10

The printed MML Passport is no longer available. However, you may download a copy from the MML website here.

The trail consists of 11 MML Districts (regions).
The MML Geocache Trail project will launch January 1, 2009 with 78 participating cities and towns. A trackable geo coin will be given to the first 500 geocachers as an incentive for locating at least 2 municipal caches in each of the 11 districts. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers must pick up a Passport at any of the designated county visitor centers. Geocachers must use the stamp in the cache on their Passports and write down the cache code word listed in each cache. After at least two municipal caches in each district are discovered, geocachers may return to one of the county visitor centers and have their Passports validated to receive their collectable coin.

For a complete list of participating visitor centers visit the MML web site at http://www.mdmunicipal.org/mmlhome/index.cfm or MGS web site at www.mdgps.org.

Elkton was once known for its popularity as a place for eloping couples to go to marry, until 1938 when a state law was passed which required a 48-hour waiting period. The town still maintains several wedding chapels, including the Main Street Chapel where Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller were married.

Elkton is also remembered for the terrible tragedy of the crash of Pan Am Flight 214 in 1963. This plane was struck by lightning over Elkton, killing all 81 people on board.

Town History:
Because of its conspicuous shape, the area later known as Elkton was named “Head of Elk” by Captain John Smith during his exploration of the upper Chesapeake in the early 1600s. The village that eventually developed there served travelers on their way between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Today, Elkton is the largest town in Cecil County, the seat of government for the county, and a progressive business community.

Continuing to capitalize on its strategic location along the transportation route between Baltimore and Philadelphia and offering encouragement in the form of economic incentives, Elkton in recent years has attracted several large employers.

Elkton’s allure as a nice, small place to live and rear a family has endeared it to its citizens, a community of people tied together by common interests in employment, youth sports, scouting, church activities, service clubs, civic committees, and countless other endeavors that form a strong social fabric. Extensive open space for sports activities, gatherings of family and friends, day-care recreation, health-minded walking, bird watching, and special events contribute to the quality of life in this community of “pleasant living.” The schools, public library, volunteer fire company, and emergency medical services are rated highly. State, county, and municipal agencies targeting social, education, health, and safety issues fulfill the market demand for a wide spectrum of public services.

Elkton’s elected leadership has recognized that commerce is the key to the town’s continuing prosperity. It will continue to vitalize growth and exercise its commitment to ensuring the highest quality of life for its citizens.

The Town of Elkton thanks you for visiting!
