Geocache Description:

The Gordian Knot is a legend associated with Alexander the Great. An oracle declared that whoever could untie the knot, which had defeated all attempts thus far, would reign over all of Asia. Alexander cut the knot with his sword and applied the oracle to himself. ‘To cut the Gordian knot’ is a metaphor for taking drastic action to solve a problem. Your challenge is to solve the puzzle solely by manipulating the knot, not by cutting it, as Alexander did.

To solve this puzzle you will need a Rubik’s Cube. A completely aligned cube is preferred, but not absolutely needed. On your cube write the numbers as shown in the diagram below. Numbered stickers will work better in case a mistake is made later on.

rubik

As I have done, in the above diagram, mark the top center square a different color. Do the same with the front center square. The next step is very important. At all times during the following operations, these 2 differently marked squares must remain in their original locations! As per my diagram, the orange #5 will remain on top and the white #5 will remain facing forward. The next photo will show you how to make some of the necessary moves. Remember that your colors can differ from those shown. A secret awaits you at the end.

moves

Follow the moves below to solve this puzzle.

1. left down, 2. top left, 3. left down,
4. right up, 5. front right, 6. left up,
7. front left, 8. top left, 9. front left.

At this point in your moves, stop and add up all 9 of the numbers on the top side of your cube. This 2 digit number we will call “AB”. All of your calculations from here on will be 2 digit numbers ranging from 17 (minimum) to 73 (maximum). These numbers will be used later. Now continue with the moves below.

10. Front Right, 11. Right Down, 12. Front Left,
13. Left Up, 14. Top Right, 15. Left Down,
16. Front Left, 17. Left Up, 18. Top Right,

25. Left Down, 26. Top Right, 27. Left Up,
28. Top Left, 29. Rear Right, 30. Top Left.

Once again, stop, and add up all 9 of the numbers on the top side of your cube. This 2 digit number we will call “CD”. Continue making your moves.

31. Rear Left, 32. Front Left, 33. Top Left,
34. Front Right, 35. Top Left, 36. Right Up,
37. Top Right, 38. Top Right, 39. Right Down,

46. Top Right, 47. Rear Right, 48. Top Right,
49. Right Down, 50. Top Left, 51. Right Up.

Stop again at this point. Do the same here. We will call this number “EF”.

Stop again and count. This number will be “GH”.

80. Top Left, 81. Left Up, 82. Top Left,
83. Right Up, 84. Top Right, 85. Left Down,

104. Front Right.

After the last move shown above, add all nine numbers together again. This number will be “JK” in the final equation.

N44 3B.(G-J)(C-E)2 W087 2(D+H).(F-K)AH

Final is an Ammo Can which leaks. I had to place the logbook inside another smaller container within the ammo can. Please do not remove this smaller container believing it to be swag.
