Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of 13 caches called the Labors of Hercules with a bonus cache to be found later. Your task is to perform the geocaching equivalent of the Labors of Hercules. The twelfth labor of Hercules involved the capture of Cerberus, the guardian hound of the gates of Hell where lived the dead.

NO SIGN, NO FIND! Seeing the cache isnt the same as finding it.

***The cache is not a fake grave. Outside of the fence, about 40 feet north of the cache location, is a small grave, like that of a pet. This is not the cache.***

The cache is located above ground and readily visible when viewed from the right direction.

The myth of Hercules

As part of his punishment for some brutal acts of violence against his family, Hercules was required to perform 10 labors to the satisfaction of King Eurystheus. The king rejected 2 of them and required he perform 2 additional tasks.

The myth of Cerberus

Cerberus wasn’t an ordinary dog. Some said he had the heads of 3 dogs, a serpents tail, and the heads of snakes all over his back. Others portrayed him as a monster with many heads devouring human flesh. Hades permitted Hercules to take Cerberus, but only if he could overcome the hound’s strength. After one of those long fierce battles, Hercules captured Cerberus for his final task. Once taken before Eurystheus, Cerberus was released unharmed back to his post at the gates of hell.

The following is background information and is not needed to complete this cache.

The City of Phoenix is built on the ashes of a prior culture. For that reason Darrel Duppa named Phoenix for the ancient mythological creature.

Agatha Christie once wrote a collection of short stories called the Labors of Hercules in which her detective Hercule Poirot would retire after completing his own 12 labors loosely based on the Greek mythology of Hercules.

It is in honor of both of these that we put together this series.
