Geocache Description:

This cache should be approached from the SOUTH side of the hilltop it is on. There are a couple of caches in an easterly direction that would combine well with going for this one. But if you decide to grab others that are to the north and northwest closer to Hwy 24, I do not recommend going cross-country to the north from here. You would have to slide (fall?) down steep and loose decomposed granite after some bushwhacking. Go after those others from the lower railroad trace approach.

Small tin a bit larger than an 'Altoids' tin. Cache holds a memo-sized log only; no room for swag. Flat Geocoins may fit in small numbers. A bit of an impulse cache: we had a nice time exploring the railroad tunnels below, & decided to strike out for some higher terrain. Having a spare camo'd tin on hand, we decided to humbly place it in the area. Our rambling leader Troy set a good pace and this is to thank him for that.

We enjoy a challenge & might not have called this a "3" for terrain, but a poorly chosen route could make it a "4". Some bushwhacking & loose terrain. Lots of cactus, so poor for dogs.

The approach we used involves going up a canyon off of Hwy 24 West. (see waypoint below) This is a spot on the eastbound side of Hwy 24. (There's another cache when you first start out you could grab.) At the top of this canyon (at the old railroad trace) you can do some mostly westward cross-country hiking and go up a wide dirt road. You'll eventually reach reference point noted below: a spot on the road at an elevation of about 7116 ft. From here you can leave the dirt road and head for the cache. Be safe and have fun!
CONGRATS TO (can you guess? c'mon, try...) yes, it is: HARTSDALE! FTF on Dec. 6, 2008. Thanks so much for putting log in bag, you saved me a trip.
