6450 Quail Manor Ct. (6450 Old Longley Ln.)
One of the Reno area's most outstanding examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture is hidden within an industrial park off Longley Lane. Most of the outbuildings & barns on the property were demolished in October 2001 in order to make way for warehouses. All that remains today is the ranch house and a garage.
The Longley (later years Beidelman and now Capurro) House was built around 1869-1870 and is located directly South of this geocache. Most of the original woodworking details are still present, but the house appears to be in a state of disrepair today. The house was designed with indoor plumbing and carbide gas lighting, both luxuries for the period.
Identifying features of the Carpenter Gothic style include steeply pitched roofs and gables, gingerbread ornamentation, fancy scroll work, carved porch railings, and strong vertical design elements. Window trim typically replicated the masonry trim of English Gothic cathedrals on these otherwise simple country cottages. Another example of this design is the Winter's Ranch in Washoe Valley. In addition to the Winters' Ranch house, there are about a dozen Gothic style houses in the Carson Valley that were built in the late 1850s to 1870s time frame. Although quite modest, all retain the basic architectural style of a gable roof with a steep central gable window and front entrance below.
There is a full color mural of the Longley Ranch House as it appeared years ago located at the Bartley Ranch Western Heritage Interpretive Center in Southwest Reno.
