On Bloemfontein-Thabanchu rd., 23 km from Bloemfontein Airport entrance rd. The speedlimit on this road is 100. Between Bloemfontein and Thabanchu I counted 6 speed cameras. Be warned.
March 1900. The boer forces are down-hearted. Bloemfontein had fallen and Paul Kruger is in trouble. And then the news that Genl Christiaan de Wet led the British Forces into a trap at Sannaspos and defeated them. As each wagon came through the drift, 2 burghers armed with Mausers jumped onto the wagon and lead it to a farmhouse. An officer went forward to see what was going on and was asked to surrender. He refused and the battle started.
The boers captured 96 wagons and 18 oxcarts laden with food, clothes and ammunition as well as 7 canons. 373 British soldiers were captured. 13 boers were dead or wounded as well as at least 159 British Troops.
There are two caches, near each other at this site. This one, a film canister, is at the monument erected on a small hill overlooking the site and the other at the small museum about 2 kilometersaway.
