Geocache Description:

Located along an old loggong road in the Cherokee National Forest.

Please park in the grass just before the guardrail. Do not park at the gate. You could get a ticket for blocking the fire road gate. It is about 0.5 miles to the cache itself. Walk down the road to the right of Turkey Creek until you get to the creek crossing. Cross the creek and bushwack upstream to the cache. Be careful, the area is rather delicate. Hide the cache so you cannot see it from any directions: there are many hunters in the area who may see it and damage it. If we notice too much damage from foot traffic we will move the cache to a less delicate area. The area is wet and boggy so you will need to wear good boots that can get wet above the top. The cache is at the lower dam so please explore the other smaller dams and ponds. It is really neat. As you explore you will see many beaver dam features including several types of dams, ponds, down trees, gelded trees, and short logs cut on each end by the beaver. I have included pictures of those features. At this time we have not found the classic beaver home, but the beaver may be living in a bank lodge. The beaver living here have been here for several years. Please respect their home and do not do anything to damage their dams or their home. If you have extra information about beaver and their habitat please leave a note on the find and inform us all. If you hike the road to the cache, then bushwack back to the Cherohala Skyway on the opposite side of the creek, you will walk about 1.4 miles.

My father Telliquah is a geocacher and Cherokee National Forest trail maintainer who lives less than 5 miles from the cache. He has agreed to maintain this cache.

Update 6/17/2009: It seems that the eceonomy has hit the beaver population as well. The resident beaver must have lost his job as a logger and had to find work elsewhere. By the look of the dirt road comming in, his job was outsourced to machines. It appears that his neigbors upstream still have work but they are not as productive as our resident was. The cache is still there and hidden well. As a result of the dam being gone it is a littler higher off the ground, so short people may have trouble. refer to pictures on this page to see what is used to look like.
