Field Trip, Missing Tower. Traditional Cache
clachanman: Archiving for two main reasons, the first is that incredibly I have stumbled across the remains of the tower some 250 feet away from where I thought it was and secondly due to the style of the hide the cache box keeps getting damaged.
Many thanks to all who enjoyed this cache and a new one will be put in place at the correct place right away.

A very quick cache on grass with outstanding views.
One jaggy fence (easy if directions followed) to cross on the shortest route. There are a few routes to access this site, however the shortest and closest is to park and start at Mugdock Estate South car park on Mugdock Road, enter parking at hairpin on road.
Walk back down track about 50 metres, look for a "T" junction in jaggy fence on your left, cross at the protected easy low spot ( N55 57.783 W004 19.004) into the field to the right of the adjoining fence, make your way towards cache site with GPS.
This site once had a very ornate stone tower, roughly 25 feet high it had a huge central spiral staircase inside leading to the top, curiously the staircase had a large gap of about two to three feet between the outer edge of the steps and the inside of the tower outer wall, I remember it well, no other floors within, originally thought to have been a folly built for Craigend Estate, it later became a watchtower for the reservoir during the war years. It was demolished due to becoming unstable in the late 70s or early 80s and sadly a small pile of rubble is all that remains. I recall it was hexagonal in shape. It is still shown on the latest OS map.
As a youngster I climbed to the top a few times, climbing the tower was always tricky then as the man who lived in the now demolished South Lodge would chase kids away. the view from here is superb.
An alternative route would be to cross the moor from the East car park for a longer walk, do not start from Mugdock village as it is extremely muddy.
I would be very interested in any photos or memories any cachers may have of the tower.
